Project Description
Secondary school library
When designing the secondary school library for the students at the Oasis Academy Bristol on Silverthorne Lane, my intention was to create a space that offers multiple benefits to students and the community. I drew inspiration for my design from the historical buildings of Silverthorne Lane, and the current ongoing construction of the area’s future development plans, as well as the architectural style of Mies van de Rohe.
I recognized that the Feeder canal had historically been an industrial transportation route for goods, and the buildings were constructed along the line of Feeder canal in a way that optimizes access to the canal. However, the future development plan for Silverthorne Lane aimed to shift its focus towards leisure activities and community services.
In designing the secondary school library, my aim was to create a space that serves the community’s needs while acknowledging the area’s history. To achieve my design intention, I took cues from Mies van de Rohe’s principles of simplicity, functionality, and elegance. I employed clean lines, minimalism, and high-quality materials to create a modernist aesthetic. The library’s layout and furniture were arranged to provide an efficient, flexible, and adaptable space for students to engage in different types of learning and leisure activities. I strived to create a design that is in harmony with the surrounding area while also being modern and reflective of contemporary trends.
The location of the secondary school library along the Feeder canal line allows it to replicate the historic structures in the area while also increasing efficiency for leisure and educational activities.
