Project Description

Revitalising the market and forming a community

The first main focus of the project is untying the traffic junction, located right in front of the station, in order to make the station more user-friendly and more accessible. Currently, most of the port area is restricted by the ferry company that no one can access. Through this project, the port area is opened up to the public and a coastal path along the Fishguard Habour is introduced. It can also attract more tourists and improve their experience in order to expand their tourism industry.

Moreover, revitalizing the market culture is vital. Market is one of the important parts that formed Fishguard with a long history but it is slowly disappearing in this generation. Therefore, this project brings the community back together again by creating a new community space, other than the Town Hall.

Due to the lack of information on the existing construction, half of the Fishguard Habour Station is refurbished and rebuilt into a two-storey building, while half of it remained in the same form and function as a waiting lounge. In relation to sustainability, rebuilding the whole architecture will cause more waste during the demolition and construction process. The main function of a train station is to provide a place for passengers to stay while they are waiting. Therefore, there is no purpose to demolish the seating area and rebuild another one.

The existing station is not only a seating lounge, but also a quiet zone for those people who want to stay in a quieter space. Since the programs in this design project produces much more noises than an usual train station does, this space is slightly separated from those loud area and set next to the laptop and charging area.
