Project Description

A reaction to growing trends of statelessness and climate-induced displacement

The situation: By 2050 the UN’s cap on global temperature rises of +1.5°C by 2100 is now projected to be exceeded. Earth’s equatorial regions will become inhospitable for much of the year. Life-sustaining resources are scarce and will become largely exclusive to regions north of the 41 °N parallel. The nationalist backlash coupled with the constant streams of arrivals will put immense strain on the traditional ‘nation-state’. This is the Great Diaspora they’ve long spoken of, and people haven’t a nation to call home. As climate migration is predicted to surge over the next 50-years, this project calls for a radical rethink of the traditional notion of an embassy, the ‘nation-state’, and citizenship.

The Lupercal Cave, an ancient site steeped in Rome’s rich history and mythology, serves as a powerful symbol of refuge, protection, and nurturing. This enigmatic sanctuary, nestled at the base of the majestic Palatine Hill, is believed to have housed the upbringing of Rome’s founders, Romulus and Remus. As the legendary she-wolf sheltered and nourished the orphaned infants within this cave, it became an enduring symbol of sanctuary and the origin of a thriving community.

Today, the challenges faced by stateless people in Rome echo the ancient call for shelter and protection. The ‘no-nation state embassy’ aims to draw inspiration from the Lupercal Cave to create a secure, protective stop-gap for those who find themselves adrift, without the security of a recognised nationality. Just as the cave provided warmth and solace to Rome’s founders, the embassy will serve as a modern-day refuge, offering comfort, support, and a sense of belonging to those in need. As the problems of statelessness and climate-induced displacement worsen, the ideas and solutions that this project advocates will increasingly permeate the norm and become an essential part of our future societal fabric.

The river Tiber, Rome's steadfast companion, guides its course with a silent promise of sanctuary. Not for the first time, the Tiber’s forgiving banks will once again serve as a haven, a refuge for those caught in the tempest of turmoil. With each gentle ripple and lapping wave, the Tiber whispers its ancient pledge of safety and solace, keeping the embers of hope alive for those of no nation.
