Project Description

Ameliorate the harbour in Goodwick

The vision of the programme is to create a new and attractive facilities for connecting the twin town to the landscape especially ‘the sea’, creating a leisure space that blend with the harbour environment and where everyone is welcomed. The project locates in Goodwick, one of the coastal towns that next to Fishguard in Pembrokeshire. Goodwick and Fishguard renowned as the ‘Twin town’ that shares a strong identity of the connection with the sea. They possess unique landscape features of tremendous tidal range and hilly landscape.

However, the twin towns had gone through different development separately, this resulted a contrast between a more commercial opened Goddwick and a traditional picturesque Fishguard. With the developments on the harbour in Goodwick, it connects to London by the Great Western Railway, as well as to Ireland with a ferry service twice a day. Hence, this brought a lot of people to the twin town and boosting its tourism industry. However, even Goodwick possess major transportation infrastructure for the twin town, tourist treated Goodwick as just a place to ‘pass by’ due to the inadequacy of amenities in the town and an insufficient planning for the harbor.

This project not only aims to resolve the above issues, but also advocate the hidden identities of the town – ‘PEMBROKESHIRE COAST PATH’, ‘THE TRIATHLON’, ‘THE CHARTERHOUSE LIFEBOAT’ and ‘THE EXPANDING CRUISE SHIP INDUSTRY’. By combining both the issues and identities, this formed 4 design principles that strike through the project.
1: Experience the tide
2: Ameliorate coastal connection
3: Revitalize the harbor
4: Bring the community together
“Working with Nature” and “Framing the view” are the ideas to keep in mind for the overall approach which integrates with the existing tree line that is recognised as a constrain that hindered the visual connection toward the site and recall the building typology of the twin town that the buildings often left a gap in between that frames the view of the sea.

The chosen site currently is a car park. The architecture not only attract tourist to Goodwick, but also act as a strong piece of social infrastructure to connect with the community by introducing a community sauna, tidal pool, and Kayak/ Sailing club facilities on site. This transforms the place to a place where people can relax and enjoy different waterfront activities that experience the tide.
