Project Description

Encouraging sustainable repair processes and reflecting this through the repair and adaptation of existing buildings on site.

Wallbridge Repair Centre brings individual repairers from across Stroud into a collaborative working environment where they repair the household items of the people of Stroud, socialise and work with each other as well as hosting classes where the public can learn these specialist and hand-crafted skills to repair their own items instead of buying new ones, aiding towards a low-carbon Stroud.

The proposal also includes an open-access workshop for the public where tools and guidance are provided if they want to work on a repair project individually. A café and wildflower garden complete the proposal, creating a busy and thriving community repair centre for the people of Stroud.

As part of the concept of repair, I also took a similar approach by repairing the site in three different ways; restoratively, revolutionarily and naturally. The site was already inhabited by a disused railway viaduct sitting at its centre with a variety of other buildings surrounding it, with some elements dating back to 1900. The function of the site has changed numerously over the years resulting in ad-hoc additions over time which has led to a cluttered and inefficient site.

Through my proposal, my aim was to repair the site in a way that celebrates the rich history of existing buildings on site by removing elements that disrupted the function and flow of the site and adapting and re-using the remaining elements whilst also improving the current state of the site through new additions to ultimately create a community repair centre in the heart of Stroud that encourages sustainability through the act of repair itself and also through the treatment of the buildings on site itself.
