Project Description

Urban Design

The main purpose of this proposal is to create a pedestrian link accessible for all age groups from the city centre into Atlantic Wharf, which is a residential area. Walkability is the key concept put forth in this proposal. The idea comes from maintaining the urban fabric of the site and working around it. This includes the adaptive re-use of Motorprint Arena building into a retail space and the whole area around it being converted into a public square. This square is to tend to pedestrians creating a smooth connection between the Queen Street station and the city centre.

The second square is to be a student hub, focused on the students present on the site. The University of South Wales and various student accommodations present on the site made way to create a student hub. This includes student-centric spaces such as a football pitch, seating areas for students, cafes and so on. The Callaghan Square is to be a premier business location, creating a new identity to Cardiff as per the Local Development Plan, 2015. Surrounded by office spaces, this square is for office workers. This proposal has put forward food trucks and movable furniture which can be active at different points of the day (example, lunchtime). A performance space is also set in the middle of the square in order to encourage street performance to occur.
