‘Re-Aiguillage’
Community, craft, immigration and communication within Alpha Tanks echoes with the site’s past. Clones’ important train station was a meeting point between the North and the South, a centre for engineering, with its large turntable, and a catalyst for sharing and communicating.
After the partition and the train station’s closure, Ireland was split and Clones isolated, triggering its social and economic decline. However, the site of the ex-train station has evolved to become a symbol of innovative alternative arrangements, allowing the steel industry to use and adapt its remaining buildings to assert themselves in Clones.
Inspired by the site’s flexibility, the aim of this project is to propose spaces to attract and weave people and communities together: Europeans, Irish from the North and the Republic, people from Clones and the workers of Alpha Tanks, through the shared spaces such as a canteen, and the sharing of craftsmanship in a metal fabrication school.
