Project Description
Contribution to a Conservation Plan - Case Studies and Regional Work
Whiteford Point Lighthouse is possibly the most vulnerable lighthouse in the UK today, this research aims to contribute to a conservation plan for the iconic Welsh structure.
We were encouraged to adopt, develop, and defend a critical position with respect to emerging or marginal heritage; particularly the heritage of infrastructure. Maritime heritage such as lighthouses are often neglected in a heritage context, partially due to their remote locations.
Research included interviews with primary sources, a practical visual inspection on site, archival research in Swansea, case study analysis and a desktop study.
The study demonstrated that Whiteford Point Lighthouse is a building of great significance at an international level which is currently at risk, conservation strategies were suggested based on the research undertaken. This academic study proved to be highly relevant and has been discussed with RCAHMW with the possibility that investigations could be taken forward.
On reflection, the study only scratched the surface of the issue and further research is required. The site is very challenging and multiple experts would need to be consulted before some of the suggested actions could be taken.
