Project Description

Form-finding and rationalisation based on rotoscoping and algorithmic design

This project was based on a video clip regarding the famous dancers Fred and Ginger. In the first step, their movement in 10 seconds of a clip was monitored and rotoscoped for the form-finding process.

In this relationship between Fred and Ginger, both are responsible for supporting each other as one system. The support is parallel and equal. Fred supports Ginger in the first layer, and Ginger supports Fred in the second layer, and Fred supports Ginger in the third layer, and so on.
In the next step, we experiment digital fabrication process to reach a stable form of our previous design, considering the structural joints, the fabric in tension, and the collaboration of two systems.

We rotoscoped Fred and Ginger’s bodies which illustrates that Fred supports Ginger in some rotating and jumping movements. Through the dance, Ginger’s dress is in tension. We experimented with different forms to express the state of mutual support and involvement between the two systems.

With the help of computational design tools like Grasshopper 3D and Kangaroo, we tested different forms to reach the optimum one.
