Project Description

The Adaptation of the Resolven Welfare Hall for future Generations

The proposal aims to reinvigorate the spirit of Resolven by learning from its past and adapting the Hall for its future users. The vast interest of the community in arts creates a big potential for the development of the entire area, becoming a foundation of the proposed changes and a tribute to the miners’ effort.

Since the closure of mines, the community has missed a part of its identity, which will be replaced with a skillset noticeable among current residents – in performance arts, theatre, dancing, singing, and a range of other artistic fields. By addressing the original purpose of the theatre, the proposal gives back to the efforts of miners by recreating the historical meaning of the Hall to the community, while also strengthening it and adapting for future use.

The strong focus on the relationship between the past, present, and future of Resolven is embodied through the tectonic and spatial organisation of the proposal, ensuring usability of all parts of the existing structure, adjusting the scheme for full inclusivity and accessibility, and creating a transition between its original spaces and new supporting facilities. To further ensure the development of the Hall as an artistic destination, sustainable solutions were implemented to reduce the impact of the structure on the environment and to create a viable economic case by investing in local opportunities and emphasising the heritage of Resolven.

Responding to the needs of current residents and future generations, the proposal aims to revive the Hall and create a key place nurturing the growth of the community.
