Designing for Surfability and Caswell

Caswell bay which is situated in the Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the home to Surability- a company interest company that provides adaptive surfing lessons and is a pioneer in adaptive gear making. It is also a popular site frequented by locals.

The centre for access to nature looks into the potential of combing the needs of the company and the community in order to create a multifunctional space -that allows the many benefits of being in the coastal environment to be reaped. Simultaneously, it aims to connect the Gower pathway.

A series of site visits and photographic records helped to formulate the form of the centre which is a undulating walkable roof accessed through the pathway that sits on a heavy concrete mass. Studying the process of adaptive gear making and adaptive surfing informed the function of the space -in turn informing spatial division.

Reflecting on the project, the importance of designing a landscape/ environment sensitive design that is truly accessible by all is realised.
