Studio 1: A centre for access to nature

Studio one was located on the outskirts of Swansea where the city meets the Gower – the first landscape to be designated AONB in the UK. The semester one housing brief asked for alternative, sustainable housing proposals for a green field on the edge of the city currently earmarked for development.

During semester two, studio one developed proposals for a surf and community centre to provide a wide range of users with better access to nature. The studio was aided by local surf charity 'Surfability UK' who aim to provide rich experiences for people with additional needs due to disability, illness, injury, or learning difficulties. The dramatic topography and constantly changing microclimate of Caswell bay provided the setting for this project, where a key focus was manipulation of a territory between natural and artificial.
