Project Description

As an extention to Whitechapel market the proposal looks to bridge the boundary between The City of London and Whitechapel through the vice of food

A Stock Exchange acts as a new market trading hub for the city of Whitechapel. I am proposing a new wholesale trading point for exotic cultural items in the City of London which would further act as an extension to Whitechapel market - to reintegrate culture into the City through the vice of food and shopping. Between The city of London and Whitechapel a boundary exists, I looked to bridge the two world with a new trade point that would conect the two juxtaposing sides.

The boundary of The city of London and Whitechapel is one that highlights the disposition of the City of London coporation. As one of the richest boroughs in the Uk the City's wealth is abundant with clean streets and its own police force. This juxtaposes the borough of Whitechapel which is one of the poorest boroughs in London. For me as someone from London, Whitechapel encapsulates the essance of London, through its people and food. I want to look at integrating this culture into the City of London, removing its sterile facade.

By creating a communial shopping experience that specialises in exotic cultural commodities. A cultural Commodity is defined as culturally appropriate items that cannot be found at local supermarkets or items that are bought at traded daily in exotic markets. My market space would specialise in selling these cultural commodities and use a new wave of trade and resources to regenerate this site on the boundary of Whitechapel and Aldgate. As a direct retaliation to Fosters proposal of a new office development on this site I looked to explore a new means of designing a central community hub in whitechapel that responedd to the needs of the people of the area and the rich cultural heritage of east london.

This project looked at my own unique perspective of London and looked to challenge the boundary and argue a new form of line that would reintegrate culture into the City. I used my own experiences and methods of shopping for such cultural commodities to find a new way of challenging this boundary. Whilst my proposal looks at a conceptual form that may not have much relevance it looks at the importance of culture and heritage to design a space that is relevant for the people of Whitechapel.
