Project Description
The local nature research centre
My project addresses the ideas of shelter, aerodynamics, and sensitivity to the sand dunes of Poppit Sands Beach, and construction.
The aim is to create a space that benefits the community whilst adapting to its unique site conditions and being aware of its environmental impacts towards the site.
I decided to place my project behind taller vegetation to maximise shelter; shelter is also achieved by utilising different structural heights within the design. In the meantime, the layout was organised by the hierarchy of privacy.
Regarding the strong west wind, the structural form of the main area (cafe, exhibit, and the education area) was adapted into the shape of a tear drop to prevent sand accumulation on the facade that faces the wind.
My accommodation was inspired by the Glenn Murcutt house. It took inspiration from the utilisation of prefabricated structures for construction. The community spaces are placed on either ends of the corridor as well. This reduces on site carbon footprint and encourages communal interaction.
The whole design is lifted using stilts using pile foundation, reflecting the idea of having a 'light touch' towards the site to reduce impact, protecting its flora and fauna.
Reflecting upon my design, I realise I need to narrow my focus onto one main idea (in this case, aerodynamics) to create a strong and coherent project. I enjoyed using Photoshop to piece my design together and aim to further develop my atmospheric presentation and rendering skills.

Hello I'm Bridget! This year I have enjoyed exploring the possibilities of architecture and aerodynamics, and wish to further challenge boundaries of architecture and nature, as well as form and materials in the future.
