Project Description

An educational facility for ruin conservation skills

I want to introduce an education facility that helps to teach local people conservation skills. It will improve local unemployment problems. It also promotes the heritage of the ruin. Everyone is allowed to enter the building and watch the teaching activities. Visitors and school members will talk to each other in this building to unite the local community. The construction process will be a community effort as well. All the building components are prefabricated and easy to install and remove. This improves the sustainability of the building.

When I first wandered around the ruin, its quiet atmosphere made me feel relaxed and healed. I can feel the history from the ruin instead of reading it in a history book. The abbey ruin has an exciting experience.

Yet the local community, which is not far from the ruin, is experiencing poverty. The unemployment rate in Neath Abbey is higher than Wales' average level. The education level of Neath Abbey needs to be improved. Adult education may improve local unemployment problems. An educational facility that helps to teach local people conservation skills will respond to these contexts.

I want the construction of the educational buildings to be a community effort. The first construction phase will take place from 2023 to 2024. The local community will use this space to gather and hold small meetings. Some timber scaffolds will be erected. People will move vertically on them and repair the ruin.

Phase two will take place from 2024 to 2028. The rest of this building will be constructed by the local community. All the building components are prefabricated and easy to install. People will cooperate to solve problems during the construction process.

Phase three may take place from 2028 to 2050. During the period, the school will be open, and different teaching activities will be carried out. Construction business people, visitors, and people from the local community will be free to walk through the building and talk to staff in the school. The size of this community will increase because every one of them has the potential to become a member of it.

Phase four is a possible future. The building will be completely removed because the government decides to turn the ruin into a tourist site. The building may be removed, however, the community will remain.

To conclude my introduction, I want to point out again that this ruin is meaningless without its context. The new building should not reject or neglect the old ones existence. Instead, it should embrace and develop based on the ruin. The new aspect of the building should not only be its shape, but more importantly, the new value it can bring.

After the third year's high-intensity work, I still feel my enthusiasm for architecture. As an international student, architecture helps me to explore the foreign world from an even more unique perspective. I am currently looking for a job as an architectural assistant. I have a major interest in heritage practices, yet I am willing to work in other types of practices as well.
