Project Description

Strouds Clothing Upcycling

The building is a frame for communal life in Stroud with the central theme being to promote Sustainable fashion methods.

The fast fashion industry is the leading cause severe enviornmental damage globally. Stroud is a town filled with pasionate desginers, artists and creatives. Alongside this it is the hometown for the well known climate activist group extinction rebellion. It's disused urban core therefore provides the perfect oppurtunity to become a hub for turning disused, unwanted and wasted clothing into fabrics with a new life to be re-worn.

The intervention brings together several making, mending and repairing processes which wrap a central courtyard so a slow fashion pathway is established. The proposal restores a street front as well as connecting to the main retail high street in Stroud. The internal arrangement ensures clothing processes are exhibited rather than hidden.

The main conclusions drawn from the site was that in order to be a beacon for upcycling, the building itself must represent this in constuction. In order to achieve this existing uninhabited buildings on the site are restored and reinhabited.
