Project Description

Gymnasium and Public Park of Spike Island

The theme I tried to address is the exploration of the relationship between architecture and play, giving the function of play to the building itself, so that users can make changes to the building according to different needs when they are using it. The design created a stronger connection between the interior and exterior of the building and increase the interaction between the building and the environment

Bristol is the largest city in the southwest of England, and Spike Island is an artificial island of Bristol after World War II. This island carries Bristol's industrial production and trade business in the past decades. However, the island seems to have lost its former glory in the process of functional transformation, and the whole island is in a silence sense. My design intention is to bring the lively atmosphere on the Island, promote and support the potential sports activities on the island.

The core design of my building is the Operable Facade on the west elevation. The opening and closing of the curtain wall can meet the above conceptual assumption , connect the public park I designed with the building, and better serve the users. The building also has some great context with the site, such as the visual interaction of the swimming pool and Avon River, the scenery and versatility of the roof garden, and the view between the gym and the basketball hall. These designs all are strongly echo with the theme - playtime. I believe this is the humanized design people need.

The energy consumption of traditional large space sports buildings is very serious. In order to achieve the goal of sustainable design, the buildings adopt the design of environmental friendly Glulam structure system, green roof, natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation. The protective effect of these designs on the ecological environment has been widely recognized.
