The Informal Settlement Along the River Upgrading Design

The Informal Settlement Along the River Upgrading Design

Project Description

Urban Co-production Experiment in Phnom Penh

Urban common includes various activities and plays roles in different countries and regions. This project aims to develop the potential of the stakeholder network, enabling co-production, activating the integration of poor people with the city, and enabling urban space to be more inclusive and empowering for them.

The site is a waterfront slum on the River, linked to residential areas, markets,
farmland, and churches within a 1km radius. The poor people were evicted from the city during the process of urban development. I hope to find approaches to connect them with the city and create a better living environment with them through co-production activities.

The design-led research project puts forward the design schemes and research products through literature review, urban commons framework, stakeholder analysis, issues finding, design proposals and space tests. While looking for the research topic, we constantly
reviewed the literature, analyzed the stakeholders and put forward some design interventions. After fieldwork, we confirmed the research questions and evaluated the effectiveness of the intervention measures. After learning the successful precedent, we put forward our design strategy and conducted space tests to know if our research aims were achieved.

Stakeholder analysis has great potential, which needs our constant exploration. When designing the urban commons, we need to do detailed research and interviews with relevant stakeholders and learn about this community, this area, this city, and even the history of the whole country. Carefully extract information and grasp clues, put forward design goals, and connect people with activities open to everyone and well-designed spatial sequences.
