Project Description
Festival stage for eeisteddfod 2022
I wanted to design something compact but something that could be extended into a larger space if required. I was trying to use the history of the docks and make use of shipping containers and their materiality that is flaky texture of the steel after erosion and also the texture of the containers. Also, I wanted to incorporate an area that could be used on a daily basis and according to me, you can never have enough skate parks/rings so I decided to have that too.
The history of the docks directly relates to the material and colour scheme. The shipping containers wouldn't look out of place since it is the docks.
I skimmed through a lot of precedents and kept trying to link two areas whose function is completely different from the other. I finally stumbled Two very useful precedents; 1. Le Cube
Chicago architecture practice MANA and skateboarder Scott Oster have added a skate ramp encased within a reflective silver cube in the atrium of Le Bon Marché department store in Paris and 2. The Open house
Sections of the house-shaped structure designed by artist Matthew Mazzotta are hinged and unfold to reveal rows of seating inside the walls and under the roof. using these two precedents, i tried different arrangements of the containers to till i got a satisfying design.
I am quite satisfied with how my design turned out, maybe I could have modelled the containers and tried of different arrangements.
