Accessible Surf Building Design

I wanted to create a holistic design which responded to the history and the landscape of the site. I was inspired by the structure and circulation of Roman Baths and Alvaro Siza's architecture. I wanted to both complete and contrast the landscape with my architecture by reintroducing nature to the area. Accessibility was at the forefront of my design to produce a design which would be optimum for 'Surfability UK CIC'.

I am very interested in the structure of Roman architecture and therefore wanted to show this through moments in my design. Accessible design was integral to my concept and producing a design which was sustainable with low maintenance was essential for 'Surfability' which runs on volunteers, donations and grants from the government.

After vising the site in person to understand it more, I did a series of watercolour painting in response to the area. I then decided on revitalising the area because the atmosphere in Caswell Bay was not very inspiring nor intriguing. I then sought to find an intriguing concept which would later define every choice made about the design. I decided to focus on revitalising the landscape which would provide natural barriers against the elements, integrating my design into the landscape, creating a threshold between the juxtaposing manmade and natural elements of my design and being inspired by precedents like the Roman Baths and Alvaro Siza's Leça Swimming Pools. I wanted to create a cohesive and simple design which responds to the needs of 'Surfability' in a holistic way.

Reintegrating nature into the landscape created a fulfilling scheme which responded to the site and also the needs of the client (Surfability UK CIC). I designed an accessible building which allows for inclusivity and cohesion.
