Unit 08 : Post Industrial Revolutions

Unit Leader

Tom Sykes

This unit is about challenging our notions of ‘industrial’.
As we move into a green revolution we have been asking: How can local industry, manufacturing and craft, and the cultures they create, be a catalyst for positive change in our dispersed, post-industrial, towns?
Our hypothesis is that if we bring ‘industry’ into the heart of a place, there will be positive knock-on effects to how towns can adapt in a rapidly changing world.
This unit is based in Stroud, Gloucestershire, with all projects based there, and all research centred and measured against this place. The year began with a small-scale design intervention and in depth research, and culminated in a new place of industry for this historic town.
At the heart of our unit is a simple, but not always supported, belief: that all production and industry should serve society. Beyond this, we hope that ‘new’ industry can help solve some of the problems of ‘old’ industry.
Industry is dead, long live the revolution.
